Part of the reason for that is the fact that BMW only sold it for a very short period of time, so it’s very rare, and part of the reason is that it’s considered to be one of the best, if not the very best, BMW in that last decade or so.

    Many BMW purists believe it to be the closest thing to the original E30 M3 that BMW has built in decades.     Doug DeMuro recently drove a 1M in his latest video review and has nothing but great things to say about it. Actually, DeMuro drove one awhile ago and claimed it was his favorite BMW ever made. This video only reinforces his opinion. One of the reasons he likes it so much is the same reason why most BMW enthusiasts like it so much — it’s simple. The BMW 1 Series M also has some of the best handling characteristics of any BMW ever. Its short wheelbase, ultra-quick steering (which is hydraulically-powered, as the car gods intended), superb steering feel and little, if any, body roll make it a riot to drive. It’s just such a tossable and exciting little car, one that cares more about the smile on its driver’s face than the time on a stopwatch.

    The 1M resembles those nimble, neutral-handling, frisky M cars of yore, which should make pain-in-the-ass purists very happy. It’s a strange thing when the manual ’box is no longer the norm in a performance car. The 1 M’s super-quick steering (2.2 turns lock-to-lock), combined with a short wheelbase, makes it feel like a go-kart. Every input to the short wheelbase from the road below or with the direct, meaty steering is met with an immediate reaction, so you are continually involved. Fifty-fifty weight distribution and the M diff allow for hugely entertaining moments with the traction control switched off, but you do need to be quick with your reactions. With a wheelbase that’s four inches shorter than the M3, and the addition of the M3’s quicker, 12.5:1 steering ratio, the 1M turns much more aggressively than the longer M3. Of course, M engineers used other parts from the M3 to tweak the 1M’s road manners as well. Beneath the 1-Series architecture is M3’s variable differential, its 5-link rear suspension and brakes. The 1M can carry an astounding amount of speed through corners, and there’s plenty of advance warning before the tires finally give way. Oh, you wanted rubber? The 1M has loads of it, with 245/35 ZR19s in the front and 265/35 ZR19s in the rear.
