The E9 platform, especially the 3.0 CSL homologation special, was very successful in racing, especially in European Touring Car Championshipand the Deutsche Rennsport Meisterschaft. This helped to establish BMW’s status as a sporty driver’s car. t was built to be a fast, sharp-handling cruiser, with a powerful six-cylinder engine and a coupe body styled by the famed German coachbuilder Karmann. This car, with its purposeful stance and pillarless doors, gave BMW a new face, a sharp-angled look that would come to define the company image for the rest of the century. It also had the performance to keep up with its exotic Italian and British rivals. The 3.0 CSi sold well, but what really forged the model’s reputation was when a version of the car was used in the European Touring Car Championships. In order to make the car eligible for the races, BMW had to make and sell a thousand leicht (light) versions of the car. That car was the CSL, and when the competition version went on to score victory after victory on the race track, BMW’s reputation as a maker of fast cars was fully reinstated.
